Although we were without a paper in our early years, every single year has been jam-packed with happenings. Can you recall one for every, year of our town? We did-with the help of various records, and penings of all kinds: particularly with the aid of the complete set of bound back copies of the Midland News kept on file in the basement of our library. Here they are, a scattering of happenings of all kinds.
1906-our town was born
1907-tbe Midland Water Co. was incorporated and given a franchise
1908-the trolley came to Midland
1909-Treadwell Construction Co. selected Midland as the site for its operations
1910-Peoples Natural Gas Co. was granted a franchise to supply gas to Midland
1911-Crucible Steel Co. of America purchased Midland Steel Co. plant here
1912-our first central telephone office was established
1913-the Midland Bank was organized, now the Midland Office of the Beaver Valley Trust Co.
1914-Crucible expansion added a 24-inch bar mill
1915-two additional open hearth furnaces installed by Crucible
1916-Midland got its first garage, owned and operated under name of Marshall and Beglin
1917-we were busy turning out steel for the war effort
1918-Duquesne Light opened its first office here
1919-first motor-powered fire truck was bought by our Fire Department,
1920-the number of telephones here reached a high of 282
1921-local industry picked up following a short depression
1922-Mackintosh Hemphill Co. purchased the Pittsburgh Iron & Steel Foundry
1923-our Post Office moved into the Midland Hotel
1924-water meter installation begun in 1916 was 100% completed.
1925-Joe Tonti, to win fame as the strongest upside-down man in the world, was captain of the Midland High football team
1926-first borough-employed fire truck driver went on our payroll
1927-baving outgrown their original church building, the Presbyterians purchased a lot on Virginia Avenue for their second church
1928-the Midland News made its first appearance
1929-Standard Oil Co. started construction on their old storage tanks here
1930-the borough's first hook and ladder truck was purchased
1931-Midland merchants held a giant dollar day sale, Wednesday, August 26
1932-this year's July 4th program was eliminated because of the depression
1933-Chief of Police warned bicyclists they must carry lights at night
1934-a local grocery store ad listed chuck roast at 110 pound, bacon at 250 pound
1935-a tragic fire destroyed the Presentation Church's convent
1936-ice jams were followed by floods in the Ohio River, highways to Beaver and East Liverpool under water
1937-new $75,000 Post Office building was authorized by government
1938-new "stop" street system was established by the borough
1939--automatic dial telephone system replaced the old manual method
1940-new Ohioview "Newton" telephone dial office established
1941-Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, and young men began leaving to serve our country, some of them never to return
1942-Air Reduction Sales Co. enlarged its Midland facilities
1943-Mike Fresty, Mitchell strafer gunner in Southwest Pacific, was credited with shooting down his first Jap Zero in combat. Two weeks later another Zero was marked up to his credit
1944-Fourth War Loan drive closed with Midland sales of $855,607.25-a big margin over $671,035 quota
1945-Japanese surrender touched off joyful celebration in Midland as all work ceased and community gave way to feelings of relief and gratitude
1946-New $325,000 pumping and purification plant of Midland Water company, was described as model of its kind, placed in service, increasing daily capacity to two million gallons, almost double the volume presently used
1947-Midland's new police radio station, WKJQ, was placed in operation, with control station at police headquarters and two-way sets inside patrol cars
1948-New fire truck, on order nearly one year, was delivered to Midland Borough
1949-American Legion Post 481 distributed new and repaired toys to more than 100 needy children in first year of new "Santa Workshop."
1950-Remington Arms Co., Inc., and Crucible Steel Co. of America announced plans for jointly-owned company for titanium production, with facilities eventually in Pittsburgh and Midland
1951-Crucible's Midland Works announced contracts for construction of a new blast furnace and 29 new coke ovens in $27-million expansion program
1952-Pvt. George (Cecelya) Bokulicb, 22-year-old Midland soldier home on pre-overseas furlough, rescued Mr. and Mrs. Paul Schlosser from drowning after their car skidded into Ohio River at Vanport, diving into icy waters twice to bring the victims to shore
1953--William R. Howell, Works Manager of Crucible's Midland Works, and president of Midland Water Co., announced proposed outright gift of the water plant and distribution system to the Borough of Midland, following borough council's official acceptance
1954-Midland High School band marched in Lions International convention in New York City. We placed eighth among 45 high school bands from all over the nation
1955-National Baseball Congress announced Midland was awarded the 22nd annual Pennsylvania State Championship baseball tournament for non-pro clubs, starting July 20, 1956
1956-Midland celebrates 50th anniversary of the borough's founding
